7/8 - “Guitar stor-ies”
By The Stabbing Pen | July 8, 2008
Last night, I decided to stroll down the street over to Sam Ash (the music store), and just mess around a little bit on their guitars. I do this every so often, and basically what happens is I walk into the store, sit down with a 12-string acoustic, play it for about a half-hour, buy nothing, then just leave.
The only possible way I’d ever actually plug in an electric guitar in a store, would be if I was seriously considering purchasing one. Otherwise, I’m way too bashful to plug-in, and playing loud electric guitar in a music store to me is just kind of obnoxious.
So anyway, I was just fucking around on the guitar, playing some chord progression I wrote like a year ago, when these black guys and the store clerk fed me some compliments on my playing. Obviously, it makes sense for the clerk to be nice to me — he’s in sales. However, the kind words from these other guys seemed more genuine. As an insecure guitar player who’s sort of come a long way since first picking up the instrument (not saying I’m great now), it was sort of a breakthrough moment for me. In the ego-filled world of guitar players, and even in the ego-filled world of the music store itself, it was a good feeling that complete strangers took some notice of my playing.
You’re probably wondering why I felt the need to mention that it was “black guys” who complimented me. Reason being, many of my favorite, and many great guitar players well, are black. Put it this way, if you are an aspiring soccer player just kicking a ball around by yourself, would you rather like to hear a compliment from a Canadian, or a Brazilian?
