7/22 - “I forgot I was a corporate sell-out”

By The Stabbing Pen | July 22, 2008

The Long Island Arena was a venue in Commack, Long Island that existed from I believe sometime in the late 1960’s to 1996. I guess I never realized it had a pretty rich history until recently.

The Long Island Ducks minor league hockey team played there. In addition, JFK made a trip there during his presidential campaign, and The Who, Jerry Garcia, and Black Sabbath have all performed there. Part of the famous “Frampton Comes Alive” album was actually recorded there too.

Eventually, the arena housed a flea market. With all the seating areas still in tact, the place still existed, and had plenty of charm. In 1996, that all changed. The arena was demolished in favor of a Target, King Kullen (a supermarket), and a Sports Authority sporting goods store.

If I had any sense at the time, I wouldn’t have taken that high school job as a cashier at that King Kullen. Well, I should have at least stolen from them more than I did.

  1. I still remember the smell of that old arena flea market. It was a mixture of stale popcorn, pickles, and burning rubber. The hippy store in the back was great, as was the t-shirt store where I purchased all of my Simpsons, hypercolor, and cross colors gear. And who could forget the roller rink next door!
I too worked in the shopping complex after the arena was torn down. Sports Authority hired me. I have no idea how I passed their hair sample drug test.
