11/1 - “Offensive costume procedures, part I”
By The Stabbing Pen | November 1, 2008
During “Halloween season,” I’m always curious as I observe what are the popular costumes for that particular year. In past years, Borat was a big one, whereas this year, I think remember coming across several Sarah Palin look-a-likes.
However, I don’t recall seeing that many Barack Obama costumes, if any at all. One Obama simply had a mask, which is I guess the easiest way to make it work.
Using blackface paint is way trickier. Well, for one thing Obama is an interracial human being, so you can’t really use only black paint. What do you do? Mix black and white paint? He’s not a gray person. It doesn’t really work.
If you did do Obama in “greyface,” to me that color scheme just doesn’t seem as offensive as pure blackface. In fact, it’s almost as if you consciously made an effort to acknowledge Obama’s background in a honest manner.
I think the blacker the blackface, the more offended people will be. Use your best judgment!
