8/8 - “Yankee Stadium’s name isn’t what you think”

These days, pretty much all sports stadiums and arenas have corporate names.   Big companies pay the money to have their names attached to the venues.

However, there are still a few stadiums out there that don’t have corporate names.  Dodger Stadium, Yankee Stadium, etc.

It’s the inaugural season for the “new” Yankee Stadium, and while the Mets across town have a new park as well, they went corporate, and that park is called Citifield.

Not that the Mets are poor, but one must consider the financial situation of a team when it comes to decisions about ballpark names.   Do people really think it is the Yankee mystique, honor, and tradition?  Do you really think these are the reasons why Yankee Stadium isn’t Macy’s Field or Nasdaq Park?

Believe me, if the Yankees didn’t have a jillion dollars, ownership would have no hesitation about calling the venue Heineken Stadium.   It’s not the rich Ruthian Gehrigy Jetery Yankee tradition, it’s the fact that despite our current economy, they can still afford a little dignity.

I swear that there’s a Scottrade (sp?) Arena now, but I just can’t remember where. You’re right about Yankee Stadium BTW.
