12/27 - “Remember Winamp?”

Those were the days.  And by days, I mean the time period at the beginning of this concluding decade.   Back in the day Winamp is what we used to play mp3’s on our computers.  Today, I assume most people use iTunes.

While it’s easy to poke fun at defunct software and technology, I do remember one cool function of Winamp, that actually lead me to a moral crisis.

With Winamp, one could download and install various plug-ins, one of which was a plug-in that allowed the user to alter tempo, without altering pitch.   Basically this meant you can speed up a song without making the music sound like Chipmunks music.

It was fun to mess around with this feature, but there was definitely something not kosher about screwing around with a song in a way that the artist/band didn’t really intend me to.

It’s one the thing to make these mash-ups, remixes, samples, etc….but to listen the basic song just sped up is probably just wrong.  Wrong!
