For anyone who reads this and knows absolutely nothing about American football, you’re going to be entirely confused.
For the rest of us, we’re all aware that a fair catch is when a receiver of a punted/kicked ball decides to just catch the ball, and accept field position at the spot of the catch itself. The receiver waves his arm in the air, indicating to the defense that he will not attempt to advance the ball — thus they don’t try to murder (tackle) him.
I’ve always wondered if any player throughout the history of any level of football has ever attempted to “fair catch a forward pass.” Think about it — especially if you’re a wide receiver — running a deep route for your quarterback — and you’re being defended one on one — by a player who often also plays on special teams.
If a wide receiver tries to fair catch a pass from a quarterback, all it takes is one brainfart from a defensive back and you have an easy completion on, or should I say in your hands.
